Episode 16 synopsis/recap/summary

In front of Sword Saint, Dong Soo proudly says he'll surpass him. In the following days, Dong Soo flicks coins into the skin of a pumpkin (to strengthen his arms), split a bean in half (to practice his precision), and create his own sword out of a block of iron. At the same time, Yeo Woon is also sharpening his skill at Hoksa Chorong.

The dismissal of Prince Sado's bodyguards have taken into effect and the two ex-guards worry about Yi San's safety. Samo decides to train the mountain brothers for this task. Mi So, Dae Pyo's daughter, insists that she joins them but Samo shoves her aside.

Feeling a sense of indignant and loyalty to the deceased Crown Prince, the two ex-guards intrude into Hong Dae Joo's house to assassinate him. Pig knows them inside and out and has prepared Yeo Woon to send the men to their deaths. If you remember from last time, Yeo Woon is not on amicable terms with Pig. Pig knew about Ji Sun's trading business and threatens to "clean" it up. In other words, Yeo Woon helped Pig to keep Ji Sun safe. He feels cheap and used. Well, you should be feeling that way!

Buying fur hats at half the price, Jin Ju hands over the box of goodies to Ji Sun. She smiles demurely and thanks Jin Ju for her hard work. Looks like Ji Sun is warming up to Jin Ju slowly, I see more smiles nowadays.

Jin Ju's job is done and she leaves with her bandit ajusshis. Outside of the butcher shop, two perverts/thieves salivate at the sight of Ji Sun and attempts to go inside. However, Yeo Woon pops in and takes them down. Ji Sun sees Yeo Woon and tells Samo about what happened.

Samo thinks it's dangerous for Ji Sun to carry out business around here, it will lure in more thieves if the business flourishes. Father Jin Gi settles this problem by sending his bandit brothers to guard the place, and Samo is elated at the news. Jin Gi also wants Jin Ju to stay by Ji Sun's side. I think Ji Sun is harboring a crush on Jin Ju. Just look at her smile! =P

With the help of the Hwang Jin Gi and his men, the fur hats become an instant trend among the ladies. Ji Sun wants to start a ginseng trade with the money earned. She knows that Joseon's ginseng has exceptional quality and would do well in the Qing nation. Samo looks confused (me too), so? Ji Sun aims to develop a three-way trade. Jin Ju explains that Joseon can act like a middle man between Qing and Japan, since the relationships between the two nations aren't friendly. They would sell ginseng in Qing and use the profits to buy fur hats. Then they would ship fur hats to Japan and....sell it there to get silver coins? I don't really get this part despite the flawless subtitle so if you can explain it better, please chime in. :)

Up in the mountains, Dong Soo is making progress with his learning. He can now flick the coin and have it penetrated the pumpkin hard skin. Dong Soo also takes an interest in the arts of acu-points, after being subdued by Yeo Woon back then. Sword Saint tells him his last task - cut falling pine needles. Meanwhile, Yeo Woon is practicing his double-sword technique with the assassins.

A time jump! 3 years later!

We see Bat and a hyung dismount from a ship. Oh no, he's back with a friend! Their mission? Kill Sky Lord and take over Hoksa Chorong. *gulps*

Bat tears his way into Hoksa Chorong and demands to see Sky Lord. When Yeo Woon steps out, Bat is confused? You brat? Where's Chun? Bat then squints his eyes and searches for Ji. Apparently, he is in love with her. Chills is running up and down my spine. She smacks his artificial limb away when he raises it to touch her.

In the private room, Bat wonders where Chun went and comes up with the answer himself. Chun probably took the scroll that he made. Bat smiles evilly. He made the list because all those martial arts masters have a common goal - take Chun's head.

Even after three years, Chun is busy crossing out names. Kim Hong Do, the stalkerish painter, draws Chun at every opportunity. When night arrives, Chun asks a kid to fill up his liquor bottle and invites the little boy to eat with him. Note: The boy is Choi Min Soo (Chun)'s son. A cameo appearance to support his dad. heh.

Bat invites himself into Hong Dae Joo's party. The Queen's father and Prince Sado's father-in-law all raise an eyebrow at this man's crude behavior. After he leaves, Pig assures them that the servant is disposable, no need to worry.

The mountain brothers have passed the examination to become royal guards. Cho Rip's face falls when he looks at the board. The painter, Hong Do, also becomes a royal painter. He's happy for the boys and takes an interest in one of the names listed on the board - Hong Guk Yeong.

That night, Samo throws a party. Hong Do comes by knowingly and gets invited by Samo. Jin Ju bulges her eyes out at him, why is he always around them for no reason? Hong Do says he came to tell everyone some good news about Cho Rip - he is accepted into this year ceremonial of liberal arts and has passed the civil service examination under his real name - Hong Guk Yeong. Samo finally tells everyone that Cho Rip is from a noble family.

Back to Dong Soo, he has finished making his own sword! He battles with Sword Saint blindfolded and is able to level his sword to his teacher's neck. Ding! Ding! Ding! Our boy is ready! Finally!

The mountain brothers greet Prince Sado's son, Yi San. They have become his highness's bodyguards. Dang, he's that BIG after only 3 years? Don't tell me he's eating ginseng or my eyes will pop out. So handsome, handsome. I call him first ladies! Photobucket

Yi San goes to the palace library to pick out a book. Cho Rip is working there and the mountain brothers greet him happily. Outside, Yi San bumps into Hong Dae Joo and the evil twins. Pig notes down the title of the book.

Yi San visits the King and the Queen leaks out that he's reading one of the prohibited books, Si Jeon. The King isn't pleased and asks to see the books. His frown quickly becomes a grin when he flips through the book, noticing that certain pages that talk about parents' love and kindness have been covered. Yi San is confused and thinks it's Cho Rip's doing. It is.

Chun tracks down another opponent - Jung Tae San, who is known for going after wanted criminals to get rewards from the officers. Chun defeats the man and they have a round of drinks together. Tae San wonders why Hwang Jin Gi is at the same level as his on the scroll. He would personally rate Jin Gi on the same level as Chun. Chun is intrigued at the idea and decides that his next opponent is our beloved father. Arg!

The bad thing is that Hoksa Chorong's assassin eavesdrops and reports back to the Bat brothers! They agree it's time to kill Chun. It's also the rule at Hoksa Chorong - the new Sky Lord takes over by killing the Sky Lord in charge. It happened to Ji's father back then. Maybe this is why Ji can never accept Chun's love?

Yi San visits Samo's butcher shop. He wants to know where Sword Saint is because the King is searching for Gwang Taek. Samo promises to get in contact with his hyung soon. Outside, Samo introduces Ji Sun to Yi San. She looks at him, memory of his dad's face floods right through her. They have a 2-second stare down. Um, girl, close your eyes! Don't be making moony eyes at my boy.

Ji Sun and Jin Ju are busy identifying the different types of ginsengs but Samo proves to be no help. She thanks Jin Ju for her hard work in harvesting the ginseng. So, like, what exactly did Ji Sun...do? She's like the second-generation chaebol in sagueks. A nice one.

Bat seeks for Pig's army. If Hwang Jin Gi is captured, both of them gain money and fame. Pig wonders how they could capture Jin Gi without knowing his wheresabout. Bat is smarter this time, by letting Ji into their plan, she would definitely inform Jin Gi.

And Ji does. It annoys me that she falls for this trick. She probably underestimates Bat. But Father Jin Gi refuses to leave, he can't let his bandit brothers take the blow by themselves. Before further discussion can take place, Chun's roar alarms them.

Jin Gi goes outside and tells Jin Ju to go in so he can deal with this battle in peace. She goes inside but Ji can't take this anymore and heads out.

She requests for Chun to stop this duel but he doesn't relent, he has come this far. Ji tells him about the Bat brothers and Chun just smiles. He doesn't give a care about them and brushes past Ji to proceed with his battle.

Father Jin Gi: "Jin Ju ah, even if you see me make a mistake, don't carry any thoughts of revenge.."

Oh father Jin Gi, that never works. Let's flip this around. If someone kills Jin Ju, would you let it slide? I know you say that because you care for her but it's not an easy thing to do.

Cut to Sword Saint and Dong Soo as they finally head down the mountains. Dong Soo is sporting a new wicked hairstyle. Dashing! He excuses himself to go somewhere while Sword Saint goes to the butcher shop where Ji Sun and Samo stay.

On his way to the bandit hideout (surprise, surprise), Dong Soo sees an army of officers from the government. We also see Hoksa Chorong's gang heading to the same place. Show down!

Jin Gi and Chun battle each other but their duel is intervened by a slew of attacking arrows on the order of Bat. An arrow hits Father Jin Gi on the thigh and sends him crumbling to the floor. Jin Ju shouts for her father, and in the moment of absentmindedness, she doesn't see an arrow flying towards her....and Ji takes the hit.

Jin Ju screams, "Mother!" All the men are shocked at the revelation. Chun kneels down beside them, "Mother? You're calling this lady your mother?!!" Jin Ju nods.

The new Sky Lord, which I shall call Bat Senior (as during the live recap), takes this opportunity to shoot an arrow at Chun's back. Despite his injury, Chun stops another arrow from hitting Ji. He orders Jin Ju to take her mother inside.

With dead bodies lying around the hideout, the Bat brothers and Yeo Woon walk into Chun's view. Chun notes that Yeo Woon has finally become a true assassin. And I'm like what? How? By learning the arts of backstabbing?! Chun looks at Bat and asks if he wants to die a second time. Bat laughs the threat off, he's going to survive until all his limbs are gone! He introduces the new Sky Lord and Chun draws his sword.

After a few strikes, Bat Senior is able to place his sword menacingly at Chun's neck. Chun is visibly shocked and inches backwards, running into the house. Bat Junior is elated and the camera pans out....and we see an injured Jin Gi sitting pathetically there. Bat orders Yeo Woon to finish him off. So...now..you're listening to filthy Bat?! I have nothing to say to you. But Father Jin Gi is not going down without a fight, he breaks the arrow on his thigh in half and stands up.

Inside the worn down house, Chun lets loose all his fury and chops down all the assassins attacking Ji and Jin Ju. Ji asks him to save her daughter and Chun quickly shoves Jin Ju outside the house, promising to save her mother.

He turns back and pulls out the arrow behind Ji's back. As he wraps her injury, Chun confesses, "Ga Ok, quickly get up. If you die, how can I live?"

Ji faces him and grabs onto his necklace.

Ji: "Save my daughter."

Chun: *nods passionately*

Ji: "She is your daughter."

Chun: *eye muscle twitches* "What did you say?"

Ji: "She is YOUR DAUGHTER!"
