Synopsis

Episode 1 recap/summary/synopsis
The story starts 16 years ago, spring 1995. A family is eating diner, watching an entertaining Korean show. Bong Young Kyu starts to imitate one of the gag man. His (rude) son seems pissed off by the scene and goes to his room without a word. The next morning, Yong Kyu with his mother Hwang Soon Geum ( who I really love since she played an ahjumma who fall in love with her 30 years old younger worker in What’s up fox(MBC,2006) ) go by bike to the market place, singing for my delight a trot song. If you had read my post « Back in time ..Korean songs » you know how much I’m fond of trot songs and guess how happy I was to hear trot song sang in this cute way. That was the cutest son-mother moment I ever saw in a drama.
In the market, the son runs errands and the mother sells vegetables. Young Kyu for an unknow reason, wants to be paid in 500 Wons pieces. As for Soon Geum, she is so fun cursing the woman who didn’t buy her product and went to another bench. To take out her anger, she takes a bottle of soju out of her vegetables.
Her son tries to stop her, but she states that she uses it as a painkiller since her back hurts. Naive Young Kyu buys it. The next bench’s ajhumma invites herself to the discussion and ask Ma Roo’s father (Young Kyu) if He will be able to let her mother behind when He will marry. Simply-minded Young Kyu doesn’t get the point and asks his mom where does she plan to send him ? Son left with the chickens, Soon Geum asks her friend if the formalities for her son’s wedding are almost done. But gets upset, seeing that 10 days before the wedding Mi Sook sshi hasn’t still completely agreed to marry her son. Ajhumma argues that if they proceeded to the wedding, it was because Young Kyu was fond of Mi Sook. But fierce Soon Geum argues back that Mi Sook sshi is a sly fox and that’s how she got her son to loves her.
We found Young Kyu in front of a baber shop spying on Mi Sook sshi. When Mi Sook’s daughter appears next him, and start to repeat almost words for words what Soon Geum said about her mother. She asks shocked-Young Kyu if he thinks the same about her mother. He is even more shocked by this suggestion than Little Mi Sook ah (that’s how he sweetly calls her, her real name is Woo Ri) cursing her mother. He gives her a lecture : » People who say bad words are bad. The police arrest bad people. » The way he lectures her, like she was a 5 years old little girl is adorable. But mischevious Woo Ri gets back at him ! If people have to arrest bad people they will have to start by his mother.
Going inside the shop, Woo Ri throws a pouch on her mom’s back but unexpectedly Mi Sook doesn’t get angry at her. Instead, she faces her daughter and smiles happily.Young Kyu is mesmerized by Mi Sook. His beatific smile is saying it all. When He offers his chicken share to Mi Sook as a naive proof of his everlasting love for her, Woo Ri takes it and ask Young Kyu what does he thinks about her mother. Embarrassed, Young Kyu is at a loss of words.
We meet Can You Hear my heart little man lead trying to run away from his house. But funny enough his father is at the scale’s end, waving a bat and her mom at the top, threatening to go down the ladder if He doesn’t go back. But ex- Go Jung Pyo scary mother has a soft heart and feel guilty after scaring him. In the middle of her « Mom is sorry », they learn that Dong Joo’s grandfather woke up.
I find Kang Chan Hee who plays young Cha Dong Joo, a young Kim Jae Won (adult Cha Dong Joo) look-alike. Likely to make the transition to the Adult story smoother.
The Dean family seems to be in a very bad shape, he seems to act stronger than He is for his daughter and his grandson. The picture is really beautiful, a grandfather surrounded by his family’s love. Dong Joo’s mom and himself seem to be really fond of this old man. But Dong Joo’s dad gives off the feeling of someone who isn’t on the level. May be the fact that He’s a little stiff makes him look like a bit suspicious; even if I know that in Korea outpouring of love between in-laws aren’t the trend. Something still seems wrong.
Back in the noisy market, Young Kyu looks for his friend who is the market’ star and pull him in a quiet place. He’s tring to solve Woo Ri’s « riddle ». His friend cracked me up when he told Young Kyu that his description (of Mi Sook) looked like a ghost. Young Kyu is outraged : in which way Mi Sook is a ghost ? They start to argue about the best description of Mi Sook. A Rose ? An angel ? What the .. Funny frustrated Young Kyu who is afraid of Woo Ri, start to cry when his friend has suddenly a revelation.
On a personal note : What’ s with this half-naked calendar ? There is a child, a CHILD ! Should I call the child welfare ?
Mischevious Woo Ri plays the cool girl although she was waiting impatiently for Young Kyu to come. She asks him what is his reply. Proudly, Young Kyu says : a Lady. Haha, that was Daebak ! Woo Ri who is still a little lady, doesn’t really get it and get angry at him. But she cools down when she understand how he sees other women. The Princess allows him to seat besides her. He looked like an happy puppy whom was allowed to go on the bed.
Woo Ri starts to « play » on a paper-piano. He asks her if her arms doesn’t hurt since she is « playing » the all day. She brushes off his worry. That’s the price to pay to become a pianist ! But her reason to become one is special, should I say. She wants to become a pianist to wear princess dresses everyday ! I don’t get why she believes than becoming a pianist will make her wear princess dress but that’s very very cute * pinching her cheeks*. What I love the most is how I can see stars sparkle in her eyes when she talks about playing piano. But unfortunately, she is poor … that’s what she says with puppy eyes to Young Kyu. Naive and tender Young Kyu doesn’t hesitate a second. He turns his pocket inside out and gives her all of his 500 W pieces. But her mother doesn’t accept Young Kyu’s money. Woo Ri blames her because she broke her promise to pay for piano’s lessons and leaves the barbershop. Mi Sook who is deaf, tries to get ride of Young Kyu who is simple minded … and that was quite the sight. I’m trying to figure out how these two are supposed to understand each other if they marry.
Choi Jin Chul ( Cha Dong Woo’s father) visits the family factory. Listens the reports and get into an argument with the factory employee’s representative. He, after, meets with Director Kang, his father-in-law right-hand. They too have an heated conversation about the way the factory must be managed. Jin Chul asks Director Kang to choose : sit and act like the President’s shadow or lay hands on the business with him. I KNEW it ! That’s not even fun … I really hate when the bad guy in drama strike somebody when he’s down. That’s not devilish, this is plain cowardice.
Ma Roo who got Oh Gyoung Group’ scolarship is presented as a clever and talented young man to the OG Group CEO’s daughter.She makes quite the impression on him.It was the first time you could see him smile. But weirdly enough when Dong Joo’s father watched Ma Roo, you could see as much sparkles than in a firework. What ill-fate will bind these two ? That’s the thought which crossed my mind …
When the zealous OG Group worker ,who tries to flatter the OG Group dynasty, tells to Dong Joo that he looked more and more like his father. Dong Joo tells him to stop lying. He’s not his father’ son. Did he never read the news about it ? Zealous-now-embarrassed worker hops it as fast as the wind. But Choi Jin Chul who already displayed his deep relationship with his not-real son earlier, and although he lives in the Blood-is-thicker-than-water country, doesn’t seems humiliated or disturbed by that. HOW unique !
Young Kyu who was crouched for god only knows how many time, suddenly gets up when his Mi Sook comes out …. and makes his 500 W pieces fall. Mi Sook starts to pick them up but Young Kyu is against it. He doesn’t want her to dirty her « pretty hands ». Mi Sook and Young Kyu offers us such a sweet moment : Mi Sook turns to Young Kyu and made the sign « together » with her hands, since he doesn’t get it then she forces herself and her voice to whisper « 같…..이 » which means together. Overjoyed Young Kyu jumps around her like a puppy pushing her to talk to him again.
Back to the Scholarship ceremony, Dong Joo who is getting bored and who tempted to run from it on the morning, has more luck this time around. When no one is around he sneaks out. And like every little boy of this age, he runs, the wind on his face and the sun on his back, like if he was a bird. This city guy enjoys his freedom and even start an argument with … a frog ! Even I, as a city girl, who is happy like a kid each time I see a cow, didn’t suffer that much living in a city to the point of starting to argue with animals … That was indeed cute and him breaking his neck was priceless. That’s what happens to little boy who wants to take on a frog !
Dang Joo who is rinsing his injury in a school’s washbowl, hears a girl singing. That’s little Mi Sook to serve you ! She is bellowing out the same « Blue Prairie » trot song that Yong Kyu was singing to his mom earlier. And « playing » hitting the piano at the same time. Dong Joo finds his way until her, and spies silently this girl who gets angry at the piano because it doesn’t make any sound whereas she doesn’t even press down on the pedal. He is , like Simba in the Lion King, slowly drawing near her, puts himself behind her and Whack presses down the piano’s pedal ! The song coming out the piano scares her, she turns around and faces him. TOTALLY MAGIC ! The meeting who will change their entire life although they doesn’t know it yet, happened. They stare at each other for some seconds who seems eternity and …. she pushes him hardly against the blackboard ! OUCH ! I’m hurting for him.
But she doesn’t even have time to ask him who he was, that the school’s guard finds them and starts chasing after them ! Whereas they’re running away Woo Ri loses her beanbag, tries to pick it up but Dang Joo stops her. Takes her hand and runs away with her.
Once, they’re in a safe place Woo Ri blames it on Dang Joo that she loses her precious beanbag. Dang Joo doesn’t get it. Why is she making a ruckus over a valueless beanbag ? He tries to stop her when she wants to go back at school. Why doesn’t she wait for monday when she will go to school to have her beanbag back ? Woo Ri argues that she can’t go to school when there are child. Dang Joo is surprised that she doesn’t go to this school and makes fun of her when she tells him that she doesn’t go to school at all. He doesn’t believe that at 9 years old she still doesn’t go to school. For him, she is lying. Unfortunately, Woo Ri really doesn’t go to school. And it’s truly heartbreaking to see this little girl who try to play strong, tears because unless the other kids she can’t go to school. I don’t really know why she can’t get to school, may be because the tuition is too high ? Anyway, upset she runs toward the school.
At school, Woo Ri tries to get back her beanbag … and succeed ! All thanks to Dang Joo who diverted the guard’s attention by playing the piano. I don’t know if they casted little Dang Joo because of his Adult Dang Joo look-alike or because He knows how to play piano; because for once (except Osca in Secret Garden & Kim Sam Soon in My Name is Kim Sam Soon) the character is really able to play the piano. I’ll take my hat off to him ! The scenery didn’t last too long, the guard found him and starts to chase after him …for the second time in the day. Poor guard…
Dang Joo’s parents and especially Dang Joo’s hysterical mom are trying to find their son. Ma Roo offered back then to help them find their son since he knew the place. They’re looking for Dang Joo in the market, when Ma Roo’s father appears. Ma Roo who is really the kind of second-male-lead that I hate, is ashamed of him and try to send him away. But Young Kyu recognizes Choi Jin Chul ! He is sure that he brought to him Kimchee a long time ago. Choi Jin Chul who seems to be affected by this meeting, pretends not knowing him and dashes off.
When Young Kyu talks to his mom about the man he met, he is sure that he was the man at Shin Ae’s house. But Shin Ae’s name irritates Soon Geum ! She threats Young Kyu. If he brings back the dead again (Shin Ae is supposedly dead) she will drown into alcohol. K-radar on ! She is behaving oddly… it smells like family’ secret.
Woo Ri is wandering when she sees her mom. Tries to call her mom but « remember » (huh ?) that her mom is deaf and instead throw her beanbag at her. Okay … now we get why the beanbag is so important to Woo Ri it allows her to « call » her mom. And indeed using a beanbag instead of a rock is a REALLY good idea. Woo Ri says sorry to her mom. Her mom says sorry too ,because it was her who didn’t keep the promise. Mom and daughter make peace. Woo Ri tells to her mom what happened to her today and that she made her friend. And it’s touching to see how much Woo Ri wants to reassure her mom. The way she speaks to her like she is the happiest girl in the world even if unlike other little girls she doesn’t go to school …officially. And even overcome her fear to be alone at night to put her mom ‘s mind at ease. Ma Roo should LEARN (do you hear me Ma Roo ?!) from her !
When her mom leaves, Woo Ri sulks because the « pianist » probably left. But Dang Joo was watching her for already some times. And takes her by surprise. He is happy that she found her beanbag and like a TOTAL PLAYBOY says : » Now that I see you again, you’re pretty cute. » I will make myself clear I’m not into little boys, but this guy (the actor) gets the potential ! I bet than in 10 years, he would have become a ladykiller… This apart, Little Mi Sook who is for once speechless, asks Dang Joo who is taking his leave if he really knows how to play piano. When she learns that he has a piano at house, she begs him to teach her how to play the piano.
Since she wants to convince him that she is a quick learner she starts to recite : « Ga Na Da Ra Ma Ba Sa Ah Ja Cha Ka Ta Pa Ha » really quickly. And backwards : » Ha Pa Ta Ka Cha Ja Ah Sa Ba Ma Ra Da Na Ga » And I think that when she was done he thought » Waaaa ~ JJang »
Although at this moment he wants to accede to her wish, he can’t because he lives in Seoul. When he starts to run to go back at the ceremony place, she runs too and throws at him the beanbag !
Picks it up and says : » A Present « That’s her thank-you gift. She explains to him that it’s a magic beanbag ! No matter how far you are, you can call someone. Their cute moment is over when Dang Joo’s parents car heads over them. Dang Joo is of course scolded and hugged by his parents. Ma Roo who was in, get off the car and let Dang Joo hops in. Just … I found this scene really meaningful …
When Woo Ri is alone with Ma Roo, whom she’s fond of, she calls him oppa ! Heartless Ma Roo can’t stand it and screams at her to stop calling him oppa ! She snaps back that if her mom and his dad marry, he will become her oppa ! Heartless Ma Roo who couldn’t be more dreadful tells her : » Marriage ! Marriage ! Stop talking about it ! Even if they marry, I won’t be your big brother ! And I hate your mom ! I’m even tired of my own petty father. But a deaf mother ? You can live like that but I can’t ! » And shoves her. Woo Ri who is only seeking for a « real » family and who really loves Ma Roo, tears … Poor thing, I just want to take her into my arms and pats her head.
But guess who is running back to her ? Dang Joo ! He writes his address into her notebook and gives it back to her. That’s his present to her. She can come whenever she wants to Seoul, He will give her the piano lesson. She regains her composure and smiles wholeheartedly. But he warns her : Only once !
Back home, Dang Joo is grounded for some days. Choi Jin Chul has the OG Group’s factory report in his hands and seems to be delighted by it. What evil plan is he preparing ? HAHAHAHA * evil laugh*
Devoter Dang Joo is besides his grand-pa. They are watching some westerns and Dang Joo imitates (in english) the characters. Dang Joo’s grand-father looks at him warmly. He starts to talk to him about the beanbag and the girl he met. In the middle of it, Dang Joo’s father goes in and treat his son’s injury. They share a cute and accomplice father-son moment, in front of a moved grand-father. Again, the perfect picture. In my opinion, Choi Jin Chul is too much of a snake ! I don’t know if he really loves or not Dang Joo, but for sure he is using him to be in Dang Joo’s grand father good books … Bad Bad Man !
In the marriage bed, Dang Joo’s mom talks to her husband about her desire to have new kids, and this time who looks like him. If only you knew … But Mister husband isn’t really receptive. The phone rings. She takes the call, it’s her long-time friend : Shin Ae ! A second please ! * Brainstorming* Shin Ae who is supposedly dead, is now supposedly alive. She is related to Dang Joo and his family because she was Dang Joo’s mom friend. Choi Jin Chul acted earlier like he didn’t know Yoong Kyu and his suspicious of Shin Ae’s call…. Ahhhhh Korean Drama’s fate … I already made my conclusions *wink*
Choi Jin Chul is extremely displeased by her wife’s behavior. She shouldn’t have said Shin Ae that he will probably become the New President ! So the cute smiles in front of your father-in-law were for that !
At night, Young Kyu and Woo Ri meet. They hides themselves inside Mi Sook’s house and Woo Ri decides « to play mom » = hairdresser ! Whereas he gets his hair cut, Young Kyu talks to Woo Ri about her. She reveals that she stills doesn’t have a name. If everyone calls her it’s because she replies instead of her deaf mother. She will get one, once her mom marries him. At this time she will be able to go to school ! But Young Kyu worries, will she be embarrassed of him like Ma Roo is ? But He doesn’t have to be worried, Woo Ri wants so much to have him as a father that she will happily call him DAD everyday.Nevertheless, she will only do it if he answers back each she calls him. How sweet is that ? She starts to talk about her dream of being pianist, lost focus and cut too much hair…
Inside the babershop, Mi Sook gives an haircut to Young Kyu. At mleast, she tries … He is so sensitive around her than each time she touches him, he laughs like a guy who just entered the ago of puberty. Lovely.
A guy enters the barbershop, Woo Ri greets him. But when she looks at him, she seems scared. One second after, Young Kyu crosses the window ! In every way you look at him, he looks like a gangster. He pulls Mi Sook’s hair and brings her outside. Now start the mess. Young Kyu tries to save Mi Sook. He fights him but isn’t enough strong. The neighbors like always, just watch and don’t step in. Woo Ri runs to get some help. Only Young Kyu’s friend and his wife tries to help him.
When Ma Roo arrives, Woo Ri pulls him. But Ma Roo doesn’t react. His father asks him to take Woo Ri and run. But He hears his « friend » make fun of him. So instead, ….He runs by himself ! I really really hate him, I don’t give a damn about his personal situation! How can you let your father being beaten up in front of you and run like a coward ! When he’s back home, he takes OG Group’s heiress call and smile ! How can he smiles when he doesn’t even know how injured his father is ! He will go by himself, have his school scholarship back. He really wants to see her again. Is it for the motherly figure that he didn’t have or is it something more scandalous who makes him smile so happily when he talks with her ?
THe fight ended. Everyone is inside the barbershop. Young Kyu is in a bad shape. Gangster will sue them all for violence because he’s Mi Sook’s …husband. Everyone ask Mi Sook about it. But Mi Sook disproves. Gangster proposes a compromise. The deal is done if they pay 200 000 W.When she hears that, fearless Soon Geum attack the gangster. But he insists that He was in an illegitimate relationship with Mi Sook. Woo Ri can’t take it anymore and scream that he is a liar and absolutely not her father. Soon Geum too can’t take it anymore and wants to leave with her son. But Young Kyu has his own way to solve the situation : even if he doesn’t like Gangster, they should all live under the same roof. Him, Mi Sook and Gangster. Pouhahahahaha x) A threesome ? That’s HUGE !
When everyone leave, Gangster whispers to Mi Sook that she should have find some correct guy instead of Young Kyu. And reminds her that if she doesn’t pay off her debt, she’s done for.
Soong Geum who was a perfect drama queen, cuts the act when she is back home. That’s probably the only way she found to get away from this situation. Soon Geum vents her frustration on her friend ! The poor Seung Chul’s mom is compared to Satan. Soon Geum blames her for everything. How come she made him met a married woman ? Young Kyu who sees that his mom is no fine, wants to go back to the barbershop. He doesn’t understand why He can’t marry Mi Sook anymore.
Ma Roo who is trying to study in his room, hears everything. They continue to argue but it’s too much for Ma Roo. He comes out and ask them to stop embarrassing themselves ! He is being rude with the family’s friend. They’re extremely hurt, they want to cut off contact with this family and decide to go away.
But Ma Roo has decided to take it all out. Now it’s his grand mother turn. He blames her. For him she is the one responsible for being now the village’s laughing stock ! Why did she want a fool to marry ? She slaps him. How dare he calls his father a fool ? She is out of breath and exhausted. Her son in her arms, she starts to cry and calls his name. Young Kyu promises to her …that he won’t get married.
